We are now looking for a Mechanical Design Contractor to work with a small team of mechanical design engineers contributing to project specific design / product configuration post customer contract award. This includes assembly & detail component design, generation of BOM’s and design substantiation (eg calculations etc) to satisfy customer requirements.

The job is full time and based at our facility in Irlam (with opportunity for home working during COVID-19 situation).

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertakes design of assemblies, sub-assemblies and components using 3D CAD systems.
  • Ensures designs are robust by using techniques such as FMEA / design review / design for service.
  • Drive repeatability and standardisation into custom stores projects by utilising equipment and sub-systems that are already developed and proven.
  • Translates the requirements for sub-systems based briefings from customer team lead / system engineer or line manager and generates solutions.
  • Works with the design team to identify, analyse and resolve project difficulties before they arise.
  • Cooperates closely with other functions in the design team including Electrical Design, Refrigeration, Systems Engineering.
  • Applies a ‘standard operations’ approach to the design process (eg calculation templates) and works with team lead to reinforce & further develop company practices.
  • Expected to keep up to date on technical advances in the discipline and related fields.

Skills and Aptitude Profile:

  • You will be knowledgeable in the use of 3D CAD Modelling (Solidworks preferred), PLM system (Agile preferred) and use of this technology to improve design quality & efficiency. 
  • You will have direct experience of documenting design and providing calculations.
  • Experience of design for CE would be desirable.
  • Working knowledge of lean, continuous improvement tools and techniques.
  • Proficient in IT; Outlook, Project, Excel, Word.

Mechanical Design Contractor - Person Specification

Graduate or HNC (engineering, manufacturing, or similar) + 10 years design experience.

Familiar with automation design (eg drive systems (motors, gearboxes, etc), bearings, positional accuracy.

Can detail design components, add dimensions and tolerances.

Can design assemblies including generation of assembly drawings and BOM’s.

Can work effectively as part of a team.

Can communicate clearly with colleagues regarding design intent, assessment of various options & problem resolution.

Understands manufacturing methods and designs accordingly.

Has worked with PLM systems and understands routing & approval of design documents (drawings, CAD models, calculations etc).

Direct experience of generating design calculations.

Documents designs.

Can use SolidWorks 3D CAD system.

Can use Agile PLM system.

Can use MS Office tools.

Can use MS Teams (including video conferencing).

Foreign languages a bonus but not required.
